Remembering 9/11

The terrorist attacks that occurred on September 11th, 2001 changed the nation and altered the course of events in the United States and around the world.  Most of you may be too young to truly remember that day: where you were, what you were doing, how you felt, and how it affected you.  Thus, what I would like you to do is facilitate a discussion regarding 9/11 with someone who does remember (i.e. your parents, an older sibling, an aunt or uncle, or a family friend etc.).  Ask them the following questions:
  • Where were you and what were were you doing when you found out about the terrorist attacks?
  • How did you feel?
  • What was your immediate reaction?
  • Is there anything else in particular about the day that stands out or that you can remember?
  • In what ways do you think that America, and the World for that matter, have changed in the past 10 years as a result?
After you have had this discussion, report back with your findings by responding to this blog post.  You have until Wednesday, September 14th to complete this assignment.

My mom was at work that morning and the network manager called everyone into her office to watch the TV. She felt shocked and sad. Her immediate reation was that this wasn't happening. It was just like any other morning until she heard the news. Americans are more patriotic and more aware of their surroundings.

Darkness. That's all that Teri Bueker remembers seeing on the television when she got home from work on September 11, 2001. Having just picked up her three young children from school, she sent them upstairs, not allowing them to witness the tragedy unfolding on the small television screen. The news was replaying the horrifying events that had happened earlier that day. What seemed like a perfect, clear day in New York City that morning had turned into a nightmare. Terrorists had attacked the United States.
Waking up at 4:50 as usual, Teri got dressed and ate a chaotic breakfast with her husband and three children. After driving her children to school and working recess duty for half an hour, she goes to work, stepping lightly into the already overcrowded elevator. It was 9:27. The elevator hushes as a voice announces that there has been a terrorist attack on the Twin Towers in New York City, and on the Pentagon. The voice goes on to explain that a plane, flown by terrorists, had crashed into each of the buildings. "The death count," the voice said quietly, "is not yet known." A single tear gently rolls down Teri's cheek. She couldn't believe what she had just heard. All those innocent lives lost... Teri stepped out of the elevator in a horrified daze, praying silently to God to help those people as she does so. Unlike most of the people around her, Teri feels no anger, merely disbelief. The day passed by slowly, almost as if time itself was frozen with revulsion.

Ten years later, as she sits crossed legged on a worn down black chair, the emotions she felt then play across her face even now as she relives her memories. When asked whether or not anything else about the day stuck in her memory, she shakes her head and replies that the horror of 9/11 only reminds her of the terror she felt as she watched the Challenger explode on television so many years ago. "In what ways do you think that America, and the world for that matter, has changed in the past ten years as a result," I ask my mother in a monotone voice, not willing to express the sadness I feel inside through my words. Sullenly, my mom stares out the window, before replying softly, "We're not as open and friendly as we once were. We're a very compassionate country, I think, but due to 9/11, we lost some of our compassion and became very guarded. We no longer extend kindness to others as we once did and we say that we fight against discrimination, and yet we are even more judgmental of people who are not of our race or religion than we before."

Me:How do you think the event has changed the world to today?
Mom:Security, sense of awareness, and sense of mortality have all risen.

I interviewed my mom. When she found out about 9/11 she was at the grocery store and all the checkers were talking about it. She felt sick to her stomach, sad and mad. Her immediate reaction was that it is horrible. My mom felt hopeless against the attacks and thought we felt hopeless as a country. My mom says, "It made people more judgmental about appearance, had higher security at all public buildings and transportation, and a greater pride and sense of unity across the U.S.A."

I interviewed my mom on her feelings about 9/11. On the day the towers fell, my mother woke to a frantic phone call from her old friend who lived in New Jersey. My mom's friend informed her about the plane crashes with eye witness input. At first she was in shock, but then as it sank in she became scared. She specifically remembers turning on the TV and immediately turning it off as I, her four year old daughter, walked into the room. She believes that if this had never happened, then the War on Terror wouldn't be so severe. She also thinks that Americans today wouldn't be as patriotic.

Me: In what ways do you think that America, and the world, has changed in the last ten years because of this event?

Mom: America has become more aware of possible dangers on American soil. In the past we didn't really worry about that. Americans have also realized that most of the world isn't very fond of us. I also think that the rest of the world has become more aware of their vulnerabilities.

The first thing my mom thought about was if her sister in law was okay. Her sister in law lives in Manhattan. She couldn't get over the lost that our country had suffered. Every since the attack their has been more security at airports and many other places, and their has been war between us and Iraq. I intervied my mom and this is what she told me.

Q1) Where were you and what were you doing when you found out about the terrorist attacks?

A1) I was in my car driving to work listening to the radio and the announcer on the radio announced that a plane had crashed into one of the world trade center buildings. They thought it was accidental. Then a short time later, they said another plane had flown into another world trade center building. At this point they were pretty sure it was on purpose.

    Q2) How did you feel?

A2) I felt shocked and afraid.

Q3) What was your immediate reaction?

A3) I wondered if our country was under attack.

Q4) Is there anything else in particular about that day that stands out or that you can remember?

A4) I felt the need to call my family members and friends to make sure everyone was alright. I remember driving home from work that evening and American flags were flying everywhere and were put in yards. It seemed like all of the sudden everyone was very patriotic. I also remember sitting in the living room that night with my husband and two daughters watching the news, listening to President Busch talking about what happened. I cried when he said the prayer "Now I walk through the valley of death." I couldn't really believe any of this was actually happening.

Q5) In what ways do you think that America, and the World for that matter, have changed in the past ten years as a result?

A5) I think we have become more aware and cautious. We take less for granted and it has united us as a nation. It made more people want to be in the military to protect our country as a result.
